Voyage Foods Plans Manufacturing Facility in Mason Ohio

Food Processing

Voyage Foods has selected Mason, Ohio as the site for their new innovative food manufacturing facility. The 284,000 facility will be the home base for their cocoa-free chocolate, nut-free spreads, and bean-free coffee. The manufacturing plant is expected to be operational by 2025 and will have the capacity to make 10,000 metric tons of cocoa-free chocolate annually once fully built.

The facility will be partially funded by a guaranteed loan program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The facility will also support Cargill, which became Voyage’s exclusive B2B global distributor for the nut-free spreads and cocoa-free chocolate.

The food company largely uses plant-based ingredients upcycled from waste and side streams. Their sustainable approach does not compromise on flavor and uses less water and land than traditional counterparts.

Cambio Roasters Unveils Recyclable Keurig Pods

Expand Franchise

Cambio Roasters, a South Carolina coffee firm, has unveiled their aluminum Keurig pods, bringing sustainability to coffee lovers.

The advent of the Keurig and Nespresso machines brought great tasting coffee to the mornings of people everywhere. Unfortunately, the pods are single use and contribute to landfills. Cambio Roasters’ aluminum pods are recyclable, moving pods from the landfill to a recycling facility and offering the material a second life.

“This innovative shift from plastic to aluminum represents a significant advancement in sustainability and coffee quality,” states Cambio. The company says its aluminum coffee pod design addresses an “environmental crisis caused by the 40 million plastic coffee pods that end up in landfills and oceans every day,” calling the aluminum pods “a more eco-friendly and high-quality alternative.”

Cambio Roasters launched in 2018 with the mission of bringing sustainability to the coffee industry. They conduct R&D to improve on both recyclability and coffee quality. This commitment has led to the 2024 launch of the world’s first and only aluminum pod for use in America’s most popular pod brewers.

Lux Ice USA: Crafting the Future of Ice with Innovation and $4M in Funding

Colorado Patent of the Month - August 2021

When it comes to enjoying your favorite beverage, the last thing you want is for the ice to water down the flavors or leave an unpleasant taste. Lux Ice, LLC is working to elevate your beverage experience with cool, “craft ice”. This effort is being supported by big moves, including a headquarter relocation and a new CEO.

The company was founded in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Following a Series A funding round which resulted in a $4 million infusion, the company relocated to Dallas-Fort Worth to a new 50,000-square-foot HQ and manufacturing facility.

After relocation, the company has announced the appointment of Michael Crouse as their new CEO. Crouse is a food and beverage industry veteran, bringing more than 3 decades of commercial and general management experience in both the retail and foodservice sectors. His previous roles included President of U.S. Foodservice at Kraft Heinz and VP/GM of U.S. Supermarkets at the Frito Lay division of PepsiCo. He has replaced founder and CEO Shawn Kilcoyne, who remains as chairman of the company.

Their proprietary freezing process takes the purification of ice to unparalleled heights, ensuring that consumers taste the drink itself, not the ice. With their innovative approach, Lux Ice has mastered the art of crafting high-quality, “craft” ice spheres at scale, and the impact is spreading far and wide.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Lux Ice’s research and development efforts is the ability to produce these ice spheres in large quantities. This means you can now find Lux Ice in your local supermarket, convenience store, liquor store, and various other retail channels. Moreover, it’s making waves in on-premise locations like restaurants and bars, transforming the way we enjoy our beverages when dining out.

Lux Ice’s commitment to quality and innovation extends beyond the ice itself. They are dedicated to reducing waste, with a focus on sustainability in their operations. This approach aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly and premium products in the market. The future of ice has never looked cooler.

Myodenovo Secures $105K for Tender Cultivated Meat

cows-203460_1920

Myodenovo has secured $105,000 in funding from its first two investors: Sustainable Food Ventures and Sweet Farms. The North Carolina-based cultivated meat startup is focused on cultivated whole cuts with “realistic texture”. Their first target? Filet mignon.

The company has recently emerged, based in BioLabs NC. Founder and CEO, George Engelmayr, has worked for Merck, Humacyte, VitroLabs, and Mission Barns, showing an impressive background in biomedical engineering, regenerative medicine, and cultivated meat.

The new capital will enable the startup to cover general corporate expenses, including payments of director’s fees and salaries to employees while continuing their development efforts.

Myodenovo takes a scaffolding approach to guide and nurture the cultivated meat’s growth. They curate nutritious, sustainable scaffolds which directly inform the texture of each cut. The meat is cultivated and grown in bioreactors, creating the tenderness we all love in a nice cut of steak.

To kickstart operations, the startup aims to raise $2 million in a pre-seed round to be completed in the next 18 months. Additionally, the company announced plans to grow a bigger medallion for a future tasting later this year.

Bright Feeds Converts Food Waste to Nutritional Animal Feed

imgpsh_fullsize_anim

Bright Feeds has built a high-tech facility to turn commercial food waste into meal for animal feed.

  • 40% of the current food supply in the U.S. is wasted, equating to $ 161 billion in economic cost
  • 95% of unused food ends up in landfills or incinerators
  • 10% of greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere originate from methane produced by food in landfills

These stats, and their horrifying implications, inspired Bright Feeds to jump into action. Their innovative food waste recycling solution, when at capacity, is equivalent to removing 33,700 cars off the road every year.

Founded just two years ago, the company has made incredible strides in their bid to reduce our environmental impact. The new high-tech processing facility uses a series of sensors and computer algorithms to turn various combinations of commercial food processing waste into a uniform meal for animal feed. The sensors measure everything from protein and fiber to ash content. An algorithm-driven software solution then controls the blending and mixing processes to create a consistent feed with consistent nutritional value.

This proprietary technology can accept a wider variety of food waste than other food recycling alternatives which are limited to dry, grain-based bakery products. Bright Feeds can accept vegetables, fruit, and other wet waste.

This feed has already been distributed to a first batch of customers whose feedback suggests the waste-based meal runs on the order of 20% cheaper than conventional feed ingredients like corn and soybeans.

This first high-tech processing plant opened roughly 7 months ago, but with the incredible growth of the company, Bright Feeds is already looking to expand further. They are now looking to build a second processing plant, one located nearer to sources of commercial food waste and potential feed mills.

Pearlita Foods Unveils Plant-Based Oyster Prototype

plitvice-1031159_1920

While oysters are a delicious treat to many, the practice of oyster farming packs some serious environmental implications. Oyster farming is known to result in a net removal of nutrients from the water column causing a domino effect of environmental damage. Pearlita Foods looked at these impacts and decided there must be a better way.

So they developed the world’s first plant-based oyster prototype which looks and tastes exactly like a traditional oyster.

This cell-cultured seafood startup engaged in a truly extensive process of experimentation to get the right textures and authentic ocean tastes. The result is a prototype made using plant-based and cell-based technologies with a proprietary mushroom and seaweed base. Combining this with Pearlita’s novel flavor mixture is the key to achieving the pure oyster taste.

Their next steps will focus on creating a biodegradable oyster shell to achieve the same experience that comes with traditional oysters. Ofcourse, there would be no need to shuck, making it easier to serve and eat.

The best part? Plant-based oysters offer a solution to meet the global demand without the impact on the ocean. In addition to the plant-based solution, they have been working with a cell-based solution. This alternative can produce fully cultured oysters using an oyster tissue sample. Cells from a sample can be used to produce thousands of cultivated oysters.

While the startup continues its research and development on cultured oysters and biodegradable shells, Pearlita will debut its hybrid plant-based oyster using recycled oyster shells for its showcasing and tastings. In North Carolina, where Pearlita is headquartered, many coastal communities offer shell recycling drop-off locations to build new oyster reefs instead of disposing of the shells in landfills.

Tiiga, Inc. Receives $100K from Nebraska Incubator

Nebraska-based Tiiga Inc. has received $100,000 in funding this past week from the Lincoln-based startup accelerator NMotion via its growth accelerator program. Tiiga, alongside 5 other Nebraska startups, was selected from a pool of 179 applicant companies.

Tiiga, a plant-based nutritional drink supplement company, intends to use the funding to expand and accelerate their startup’s reach. They intend to open up new avenues for selling Tiiga products. The company launched in June 2020 and have since secured shelf space for their products at about 50 Hy-Vee supermarkets across five states and are expanding the product to Texas and Salt Lake City.

The company was born when the founders met in Lincoln, Nebraska decided the world needed to experience the joy of baobab-based beverages. Harrouna Malgoubri introduced Jeff Tezak and Katy Kerins to the baobab fruit which came from his native country, Burkina Faso, in western Africa.

They began to explore the benefits of the fruit and quickly moved into an R&D phase to formulate a low-calorie and natural drink option. The formula also had to be sustainably produced and have the potential to create positive change in the health of others and for women and entire communities in Africa. This is no easy feat, requiring extensive formulation testing and experimentation.

SCiFi Foods’ CRISPR Cultivated Beef Meets Price Parity

forefront of bioscience automated farming equipment

SCiFi Foods is set on creating the next lightbulb. It’s the seemingly simple innovations that really revolutionize our future. The thing about these simple innovations is … they are only simple after they’ve been invented. With that in mind, SCiFi Foods is tackling the daunting task of cruelty-free, sustainable, cultivated meat.

The company’s goals include replicating the same taste, texture, and nutrition as conventional meat without the cost to the planet or the unsustainable practices of raising and farming beef. With their recent breakthrough, their cell-based beef is now 1000 times cheaper to produce.

The California-based startup has recently announced they have achieved price parity with beef using their proprietary cultivated meat food-tech. This comes as the company’s first R&D announcement, and is also a first for the world. SCiFi Foods is officially the first to produce edible cultivated beef cell lines grown in a single-cell suspension.

“We’ve known from day one that by opting to work on cultivated beef, we were choosing a much bigger challenge in terms of the science and technology required,” SCiFi Foods CEO and co-founder Joshua March said in a statement. “However, beef is the ultimate prize—with both the biggest market demand and the biggest climate impact. This breakthrough illustrates the power of our bioengineering strategy, and is a huge testament to our team and the platform they’ve built.”

Their proprietary beef cultivating process uses CRISPR technology. CRISPR began as a controversial technology adapted from a genome editing system that bacteria use for immunity. By capturing and inserting small pieces of DNA from the attacking virus into their own DNA, bacteria create what’s called CRISPR arrays. But for all of its potential, the tech has also brought controversy as studies have found that altering the DNA of embryos or eggs and sperm could cause mutations that create other health threats.

SCiFi Foods has done extensive testing and determined the use of CRISPR is unlikely to pose risks to humans who consume CRISPR-edited cultivated beef. The technology also allows for price parity, with a good chance that cultivated beef prices will drop even further.
