Nebraska-based Tiiga Inc. has received $100,000 in funding this past week from the Lincoln-based startup accelerator NMotion via its growth accelerator program. Tiiga, alongside 5 other Nebraska startups, was selected from a pool of 179 applicant companies.

Tiiga, a plant-based nutritional drink supplement company, intends to use the funding to expand and accelerate their startup’s reach. They intend to open up new avenues for selling Tiiga products. The company launched in June 2020 and have since secured shelf space for their products at about 50 Hy-Vee supermarkets across five states and are expanding the product to Texas and Salt Lake City.

The company was born when the founders met in Lincoln, Nebraska decided the world needed to experience the joy of baobab-based beverages. Harrouna Malgoubri introduced Jeff Tezak and Katy Kerins to the baobab fruit which came from his native country, Burkina Faso, in western Africa.

They began to explore the benefits of the fruit and quickly moved into an R&D phase to formulate a low-calorie and natural drink option. The formula also had to be sustainably produced and have the potential to create positive change in the health of others and for women and entire communities in Africa. This is no easy feat, requiring extensive formulation testing and experimentation.

Red Trail Energy is the Nation’s First to Capture and Store Carbon Dioxide Underground

intelligent water systems

Red Trail Energy has made great strides in carbon capture and sequestration following the conclusion of six years of research and development as well as hefty investments. The ethanol plant has become the first facility in the United States to capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions deep underground.

The company officially began the injection of CO2 captured from the plant on June 16 and made the official announcement two days later. They expect that each day the plant will capture 500 metric tons of CO2 produced by fermenting corn to make fuel.

This sustainable step reinforces and supports the path for long0term viability of current energy sources in the state. The North Dakota Industrial Commission gave approval for Red Trail Energy to commercially capture 180,000 metric tons of CO2, a greenhouse gas.

This milestone follows after the state became the first in the nation to secure authorization from the Environmental Protection Agency to inject CO2 deep underground for permanent storage. This earlier authorization was granted in 2018. The CO2 is deposited more than a mile underground into the Broom Creek Formation – a porous layer of rock sandwiched between “impenetrable” rock layers that will permanently store the greenhouse gas in the earth.

Officials credited the Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota for doing work that demonstrated the feasibility and potential of carbon capture and storage in the state. They estimated that North Dakota can safely store more than 252 billion tons of CO2

Red Trail Energy continuously monitors the stored CO2  using a carbon fiber installation at the injection well as well as an adjacent monitoring well.

Resolve Medical Bills Secures $3.3M in Seed Funding

Software111

Resolve Medical Bills, a New Hampshire startup tackling the nation’s medical debt, has successfully raised $3.3. Million in seed funding following a round led by AlleyCorp. Additional support was found with the founders of category defining companies such as Funding Circle, Collective Health, Collective Medical, Nomi, Compass, Seamless, and more.

The company was founded in response to the nation’s growing medical debt. In fact, recent studies have shown that 50% of Americans are currently in medical debt. Further studies have shown that a large portion of issued medical bills contain errors and are grossly overcharged. Resolve’s founder, Braden Pan, suffered a serious accident and was met with bill after bill in the months that followed. He partnered with Endurance Companies to form the company in 2019 and has since grown it to become one of the leading medical billing advocates in the US.

Resolve has built a platform to review, negotiate, and lower medical bills on behalf of patients. The platform utilizes proprietary data algorithms to scan and detect pricing issues, coding and/or billing errors. Trained negotiators then take over to secure fair rates and appeal insurance denials. To date, the company has relieved nearly $20M in medical debt, averaging 60-65% savings.

The new funding will help support the company’s growth. They currently employ 22 full-time staff and intend to expand soon with the addition of a Chief of Staff, Head of Product, and a number of software developers. The funding will also support the development and growth of their platform and algorithms, further automating the process and increasing capacity and accuracy.

Polaris Genomics Receives $100K and Will Continue Research on their PTSD Genomic Test

Maine Patent of the Month - June 2021

Polaris Genomics, a biotech startup, has announced their research will continue thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Maryland Industrial Partnership Program (MIPS). This grant matches a first grant awarded by MIPS back in the fall of 2020.

The first grant allowed Polaris to begin partnering with researchers at the University of Maryland Baltimore, and with this second grant in place, that research can proceed.

The company brought the first and only PTSD genomic test to the industry, calling it PTS-ID. This genomic blood test is thought to identify persons with PTSD, measure the disease severity, and detect treatment response. The research will continue to evaluate PTS-ID’s efficacy and performance.

Early research had been conducted with a test pool comprising mostly white males. Their tests were then expanded, creating a small cohort of 69 African American men and women, allowing the researchers to observe how their biomarkers performed in a wider population. With a growing statistical significance in the data, the company intends to initiate Phase Two.

“Phase two will allow us to validate these findings with a larger group and to test the biomarkers’ ability to detect changes with treatment,” said Dr. Daniel J Roche, PhD, Assistant Professor Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center.

The second grant is crucial to the mission of better serving veterans, first responders, frontline workers, and trauma-impacted communities alike. Based on the genomic insights and research outcomes, Polaris is moving rapidly towards product commercialization.

ransomware-2320793_960_720

PrologMobile, a tech company set on revolutionizing the way customers and businesses access device data, has successfully raised $1 million in funding from Atlanta-based Valor Ventures.

The company, who’s known as the reverse supply chain startup, intends to use this funding to deepen their roots in Atlanta’s tech ecosystem. This funding will help in this endeavor, expanding their staff and solidifying their presence in Atlanta.

The company has spent years developing a Device Intelligence Platform meant to provide value-based decisioning analytics. They’ve already begun providing these analytics for about 20% of the global reverse supply chain for mobile devices.

This mission came about when the company determined that no one in the global reverse supply chain for mobile devices had a good idea of what they are buying or selling. Mobile devices are complex with many interacting parts that need to be considered. PrologMobile’s platform sets out to provide a better way for devices to be analyzed, prices, and presented for resale.

Blustream Corp Secures $5.2M in Series A Funding

Wisconsin

Massachusetts-based Blustream Corp. has announced the successful close of their Series A funding round which brought in $5.2 million. The company is developing the technology needed to connect companies to customers through product engagement.

The funding round was led by PBJ Capital of Lincoln and Gutbrain Ventures of Boston with participation from existing investors, including The Zenie Group of Maine and York IE of New Hampshire, the company announced on Tuesday.

Blustream began when its founder, Bob Bean, had a product problem and no solution. With a crack in his beloved guitar and no way to fix it, he tried to reach out to Bob Taylor, the President of Taylor Guitars to try and find a solution. In the same breadth, he realized how much this connectivity is needed across any market. Thus was born the mission to connect companies and customers via product engagement, reducing the need to worry about broken, cracked, and failing products.

What came next was years of building the startup, raising $3 million in funding in 2020 and now the recent Series A round. The latest funding is earmarked for product development and expansion into new industries. This includes investments in their R&D department as well as the expansion of their sales and marketing staff.

Customer-engagement is built with personalized product messages and tracking after-sale product engagement data. With product engagement data, companies can create a direct channel with their customers to drive revenue, retention, and referrals.

SAFI-Tech and Indium Corp. Partner Up for SAFI-Tech’s Supercooled Soldering Technology

manufacturing

Iowa-based SAFI-Tech has announced a partnership with Indium Corporation. SAFI-Tech has set their sights on developing a no-heat and low-heat solder and metallic joining products. This partnership will bring this technology to customers, allowing them to explore the unique opportunities available with supercooled solder materials.

Their technology is a supercooled liquid metal particle which can allow manufacturers to solder on flexible substrates without the need for heat. The liquid particles are about one-fiftieth the size of a human hair and are filled with liquid metal. When popped, the particles release the encapsulated liquid metal which quickly solidifies, creating a solder joint. This unique process allows soldering to take place at room temperature. Removing heat from electronics manufacturing enables smaller, thinner, and flexible designs, currently unachievable with standard materials and processes.

This partnership has come just two years after SAFI-Tech was awarded an SBIR grant of $200,000 from the Department of Energy for research into their supercooled liquid metal technology.

“We’re always looking for innovative materials solutions that can give our customers ways to overcome current limitations of solder products,” said Indium Corporation President and COO Ross Berntson. “SAFI-Tech’s supercooling platform is a unique approach that has the potential to be a solution across a variety of applications.”

Sortera Alloys Partners with Novelis to Improve Automotive Alloy Recycling

Sortera Alloys, Inc.,creators of proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) focused on sorting automotive metals, has announced a strategic partnership with Novelis. Inc. Novelis is the leading sustainable aluminum solutions provider.

The partnership will bring Sortera’s patented technologies to Novelis’ production process, allowing the company to recycle and reuse higher amounts of both automotive post-production and post-consumer scrap.

In this day and age, mixed aluminum alloys cannot be re-separated into their individual base alloys. This means high-value alloys are forced into lower value uses. The goal is to use Sortera’s technology, which uses their AI along with novel data analytics and sensors, to tackle this limitation, bringing another high-value life to the alloys.

This partnership will ensure Novelis can separate the mixed scrap into their individual alloys, recycling them back into the same product and closing the loop. This will allow Novelis to meet original equipment makers’ exacting needs for performance, durability, safety, and design. Novelis has been working towards sustainability goals including a reduction of their carbon footprint by 30% by 2026 and this partnership is a big step in the right direction.

“We are thrilled to work with Novelis, the global leader in sustainable aluminum solutions,” said Michael Siemer, CEO, Sortera Alloys. “Together with existing investors like Chrysalix and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and now Novelis, we are poised to disrupt the global aluminum recycling space while cutting global emissions and driving a more sustainable industry.”

NAPIGEN has Announced $7.85M in Seed Funding for Gene Editing Technology

research and development in Alabama

Delaware-based NAPIGEN, an ag-tech and genetics startup, has successfully raised $7.85 million in an initial seed funding round. The company, which operates out of the Delaware Innovation Space at the DuPont Experimental Station in Alapocas, has had a series of successes recently, including an NIH SBIR grant back in June.

The seed funding comes from a private stock sale led by The Grantham Foundation and RA Capital Management. The company intends to use the funding to apply its mitochondrial gene editing tech for hybrid seed production in wheat and rice. The technology can also be used to develop mitochondrial expression systems for use in plant mitochondria.

NAPIGEN’s technology has unique gene editing capabilities specializing in altering cytoplasmic genomes including mitochondrial and chloroplast DNA. NAPIGEN previously demonstrated use of CRISPR technology for genome editing of organellar DNA in yeast and algae.

The company was founded with the intention of addressing the global food shortage. With a growing population and increasing demand for food, products like grains are essential to feed the world.

“This can only be possible with breaking the biological yield limit of crop plants, which is exactly what we are aiming to do. Yield increases benefit both agriculture and environmental protection by reducing the need for deforestation to create new farmland, as well as decreasing the use of agricultural chemicals” said Dr. Hajime Sakai, co-founder and CEO at NAPIGEN.
