Day Three Labs to Study Cannabis as a Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease

Day Three Labs (DTL), is a Colorado-based cannabinoid CPG ingredient manufacturer. With their expertise in the development of these novel cannabis products, the company has set out to evaluate cannabis as a treatment for Parkinson’s Disease.

This mission has come to light after the company announced the world’s first government-sponsored cannabis technology incubator will aid in funding this research.

While the headquarters are in Denver, the research facility is in Israel, where regulations make studying cannabis much easier than in the United States. They are the only company to have passed the first phase of the CanNegev program, a cannabis technology incubator that receives funding from the Israeli government.

With this first phase complete, the company will receive funding and move into phase two. This means initiating the research and data collection for presentation to the Israel Innovation Authority as soon as September.

Through the research program, Day Three Labs plans to study cannabis compounds delivered via its proprietary Unlokt technology as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease symptoms. The funding from CanNegev will enable the company to find the combination of cannabinoids that work best to treat Parkinson’s disease and allow the company to carry the research from the lab to product development.

Parkinson’s Disease affects more than 10 million worldwide. Cannabis has been an approved treatment option in Germany since 2017. However, with the ever growing list of marijuana and cannabis strains and product types, choosing a formulation that is most effective at providing consistent relief is a true challenge. DTL’s research will take advantage of the Unlokt technology which packs cannabis into a natural protein which bypasses the liver, shuttling cannabis directly into the body’s circulation. This allows the cannabinoids and terpenes to be released and absorbed into the bloodstream and should have a beneficial effect.

SCiFi Foods’ CRISPR Cultivated Beef Meets Price Parity

SCiFi Foods is set on creating the next lightbulb. It’s the seemingly simple innovations that really revolutionize our future. With that in mind, SCiFi Foods is tackling the daunting task of cruelty-free, sustainable, cultivated meat.

The California-based startup has recently announced they have achieved price parity with beef using their proprietary cultivated meat food-tech. SCiFi Foods is officially the first to produce edible cultivated beef cell lines grown in a single-cell suspension. 

“We’ve known from day one that by opting to work on cultivated beef, we were choosing a much bigger challenge in terms of the science and technology required,” SCiFi Foods CEO and co-founder Joshua March said in a statement. “However, beef is the ultimate prize—with both the biggest market demand and the biggest climate impact. This breakthrough illustrates the power of our bioengineering strategy, and is a huge testament to our team and the platform they’ve built.” 

Their proprietary beef cultivating process uses CRISPR technology. CRISPR began as a controversial technology adapted from a genome editing system that bacteria use for immunity. By capturing and inserting small pieces of DNA from the attacking virus into their own DNA, bacteria create what’s called CRISPR arrays. But for all of its potential, the tech has also brought controversy as studies have found that altering the DNA of embryos or eggs and sperm could cause mutations that create other health threats. 

SCiFi Foods has done extensive testing and determined the use of CRISPR is unlikely to pose risks to humans who consume CRISPR-edited cultivated beef. The technology also allows for price parity, with a good chance that cultivated beef prices will drop even further.

Allied Cycle Works Releases their First Full-Suspension Mountain Bike

Allied Cycle Works has announced the official release of their first-ever full-suspension mountain bike.

Based in Arkansas, the company has been designing and developing unique carbon fiber bicycles with perfectly crafted manufacturing processes. Allied Cycle started their journey with the intention of producing top-quality bikes right here in America. This mission included the need for control over each piece that goes into each bike. From brand, to design, to raw material selection, each component is treated with the same care and consideration.

This attention to production and quality continues, and is felt in every bicycle made. Including the new BC40 mountain bike. This is a first for the company as they have not previously designed a full-suspension mountain bike. They have spent countless hours designing this bike from front to rear. From design to prototype to testing, and finally release, the company has spent more than 2 years conducting research and development for this bicycle. Despite supply chain issues and other challenges, the bike came to fruition with a 4.5 lbs frame and a cross between cross-country and all-day trail sled capabilities.

Canaery Secures $14M in Seed Funding for their Digitized Olfaction Technology

Canaery, the startup focused on digitized olfaction, announced they have successfully secured more than $4 million in seed funding to accelerate their development.

While others are advancing imaging and object recognition systems, this company has switched gears to target our other sense – smell. The company is developing a scent-sensing platform capable of detecting scents with the same accuracy as a trained animal. 

Their system can be used in a range of applications including:

  • Detection of explosives, biological threats, contraband;
  • Identification of zoonotic diseases (eg. swine flu) and plant diseases before there are any visible signs;
  • In human health through screening for infectious and physiologic diseases.

The funding will help in the development and rendering of the Canaery neural interface, which is thinner than a piece of tissue paper and a quarter the size of a US postage stamp. This neural interface is based on a decade of primary research and is capable of detecting every scent that enters the natural olfactory system of a working animal. 

So the animal smells, as usual, and the neural interface detects these chemical signatures. The interface then wirelessly transmits the chemical signatures to the cloud for processing within seconds – even before the animal consciously identifies the scent. In fact, the interface can even identify scents the animal has never encountered before.

The round was led by Breakout Ventures and included participation from major investors Dolby Family Ventures, KdT Ventures and SOSV. Canaery previously was part of the IndieBio class of 2021.

AlgiKnit Pulls $13M in Series A Funding

New York-based AlgiKnit Inc., an algae-based textile startup, is working towards scaling their production capabilities and expanding their team. The company has just announced they secured $13 million in Series A funding led by Collaborative Fund. H&M CO: LAB (the investment arm of H&M Group), Starlight Ventures, Third Nature Ventures, as well as previous backers Horizons Ventures and SOSV also participated in the round.

Their latest round of funding will support their circular economy mission as well as help to invest in its manufacturing and R&D divisions. The startup plans to increase its team, currently 20 people, and is actively hiring for 10 new roles at its headquarters in North Carolina.

The company is focused on revolutionizing the fashion ecosystem, transforming seaweed into fiber for a truly eco-conscious material choice. At present, fast fashion and the over production of textiles from non-sustainable materials is creating massive environmental impacts. To combat this, the company started developing materials from seaweeds such as Macrocystis pyrifera – one of the planet’s most renewable and regenerative organisms. With these materials, they can generate yarns and fibers without relying on petroleum or toxic chemicals.

The startup says its goal is to provide designers and brands with the tools and materials necessary to create a sustainable future for people and the planet. AlgiKnit’s fibers can be used in various form factors including knit and woven goods for apparel, interiors, furnishings, and even automotives.

Safari Solutions Awarded $10K at Startup Competition for Car Wash Technology

Safari Solutions, a car wash technology startup, took home a $10,000 award after winning the Startup Appalachia Pitch Competition.

The Kentucky-based startup, founded in 2021 by car wash operator Dakota Hoskins, won first place when they pitched their idea to add barcode scanning capabilities to any car washing kiosk. The company had developed a module that enables car wash operators to add these barcodes which could enable various marketing campaigns.

During his pitch, Hoskins said the idea for the company’s barcode scanning technology came after he attended a trade show in Las Vegas last fall. He was there looking for marketing opportunities to promote his car washes’ unlimited wash club program, and while he found a firm that fit the criteria in OptSpot, the car washes weren’t equipped with the right kind of technology to do such a marketing campaign.

Hoskins believes the technology, which includes a fixed mount for a kiosk and a handheld device, could easily increase a car wash’s revenue by 30%-40%. The products also allow operators to streamline barcode management across multiple point-of-sale systems.

The company is already looking to expand their team and is on the lookout for another programmer to continue development. The funding will go towards additional product research and development, and patent protections.

Jellatech Reveals its First Animal-Free, Cell-Based Collagen

Jellatech, a North Carolina-based biotech startup, has announced the successful production of cell-based collagen using their proprietary cell lines. In their announcement, the company explains they have created full-length triple-helical collagen that functions identically to conventional sources.

Collagen is used in numerous industries including cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food production. As such, Jellatech set out to create a clean and sustainably superior version of the protein. A version that does not rely on animals for sourcing. Collagen is traditionally sourced from animal skin, bones, and connective tissue.

In April last year, Jellatech secured $2 million in a pre-seed funding round which supported the ongoing collagen and gelatine R&D. This funding and extensive R&D work allowed Jellatech to send out samples of its collagen development with the aim of commercializing within 18 months. The recent announcement shows they have achieved bioidentical results with cell-based collagen – suggesting their ambition is within reach.

“This is a major milestone for us and I am beyond proud and excited that we are already here. Being able to see our clean cell-based collagen with the naked eye – it brings happy tears,” Stephanie Michelsen, CEO of Jellatech said in a statement.

The company first considered plant-based and fermentation-based methods before deciding against them due to their known limitations. Jellatech claims that both are unable to fully mimic the range of functionality that animal-based collagen contains, therefore its cell-based innovation is a step ahead.

Synteris Receives $2.7M Award for Ceramic Electronics 3D Printing Technology

Synteris, a Maryland-based startup, has raised $2.7 million in funding towards the development of a novel ceramic 3D printing approach. The funding comes from the US Department of Energy who released a total of $175 million through their Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) grant program. The grants will fund 68 R&D projects focused on disruptive technologies in the energy, electric vehicle, storage, and nuclear recycling industries.

Synteris’ technology is designed to serve as an alternative means of producing parts from non-oxide ceramics, like carbides, nitrides, and borides. The approach synthesizes non-oxide material in-situ as opposed to directly laser melting ceramic feedstock powders. The use of laser-induced reactions between their reactive precursor system and a gaseous atmosphere synthesize an array of carbides or nitrides by altering the reactant gas and precursor constituents.

The technology has been coined Selective Laser Reaction Sintering (SLRS). The company intends to use this new funding to deploy SLRS in the creation of a new form of electronics packaging capable of improving EV and aircraft performance.

As part of the ARPA-E program, Synteris will work with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to improve the thermal management, power density, performance, and lifetime of ceramic packaging for power electronic modules.

A Partnership Between InoBat Auto and Ideanomics will Advance EV Battery R&D and Production

InoBat Auto, a European pioneering supplier of premium batteries for electric vehicles (EV), has announced plans for a phased investment project based in Indiana. The project will be achieved in cooperation with Ideanomics, a global company focused on accelerating the adoption of commercial EVs.

The multi-phase project will have three distinct stages. First, they will open a new R&D and production facility for battery module and pack assembly with an initial annual production capacity of 100 MWh. Then each company will aim to construct a full commercial-scale battery module and pack assembly plant with an initial 2-3 GWh yearly production capacity.

The first two phases would be supplied by cells from InoBat Auto’s European facilities. The company is also exploring the option to construct a tailor-made battery cell production facility with an initial 4 GWh annual capacity.

The goal is to develop, produce, and distribute integrated battery pack solutions for the US market. The strategic partnership was established in January 2022 in an effort to expedite the innovations needed to accelerate EV adoption. InoBat Auto’s first-generation NMC 622 pouch cell achieves quicker charging, extra life cycle, higher capacity, and better capacity retention that the benchmark pouch cells. This technology will benefit Ideanomics, creating a significant technological edge for Ideanomics’ vehicle, charging, and energy solutions to meet fleet operations’ growing needs for clean mobility and infrastructures.

HydroGraph Clean Power Inc. has announced the opening of their 13,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Manhattan, KS for the production of its graphene. The new facility will allow the company to combine their R&D and engineering work under a single roof.

HydroGraph is a commercial manufacturer of high-quality nanomaterials and alternative-energy fuels. Their patented Hyperion detonation process is capable of producing high quality graphene at minimal cost and in an environmentally friendly manner. This is achieved through its low energy consumption and absence of emissions. The process can produce standard fractal graphene and the company’s proprietary “reactive graphene”

Fractal graphene is often used as an additive super-material to increase strength, water resistance, flexibility, and electrical conductivity. The reactive graphene has a unique ability to chemically combine with other products in a superior bonding process. 

The new facility is designed using the famous “Bell Labs” approach, providing R&D workspace near the manufacturing and production process to enhance future innovation and product development.
