TensorWave Secures $43M SAFE Funding

software

Nevada-based TensorWave has secured $43 million in a SAFE funding round – or a “Simple Agreement for Future Equity”. Startups use SAFEs to receive funding without determining a valuation or issuing equity immediately.

The cutting-edge cloud platform and AI startup has been fighting to break NVIDIA’s control over the AI industry by building alternative solutions that rival both performance and price. The SAFE funding will enable TensorWave to increase its data center capacity by deploying thousands of AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs. The company will also expand its team and develop its new inference platform.

TensorWave aims to meet the increasing demands in the global AI market, projected to soar from $196.63 billion in 2023 to $1.81 trillion by 2030. With their cloud service, TensorWave provides essential infrastructure for future AI applications.

TensorWave CEO Darrick Horton noted the importance of this funding for scaling operations, stating, “This funding allows us to significantly scale our team and deploy thousands of AMD Instinct AI accelerators to empower the startups and enterprises shaping our technological future.”

Laborie Medical Technologies takes the lead in diagnosing GERD with alpHaONE System

doctor-840127_1920

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, affects millions of people worldwide. Its diagnosis can be difficult, as current methods include invasive endoscopic exams and X-rays. But Laborie Medical Technologies is changing the game with their alpHaONE system—a wireless device that can be implanted in the esophagus and collect data for up to four days.

The alpHaONE system works by placing a small sensor capsule on the esophageal wall, a short distance from the stomach, and recording changes in pH levels over time. This data is then transmitted to a handheld device that logs the information and allows the user to document their meals, time spent lying down, and feelings of heartburn, coughs, or deep belches.

One of the standout features of the alpHaONE system is its ease of use. Patients can carry the handheld device with them wherever they go, making it easy to track their symptoms and lifestyle habits. Laborie also offers a virtual instruction program to help patients better understand how to use the device and interpret the data.

The New Hampshire-based company estimates that about 1 in 5 people in the U.S. may suffer from GERD. With the alpHaONE system, these patients can now receive a more accurate diagnosis and better manage their condition.

Laborie is a global medical technology company specializing in Gastroenterology, Urology & Urogynecology, and Obstetrics, Gynecology & Neonatal. Through the development and manufacture of high quality, high impact diagnostic and therapeutic products, Laborie consistently contributes to the improvement of patient outcomes.

The alpHaONE system is just one example of the many exciting developments happening in the world of medical research and development. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more innovative solutions that will improve patient care and outcomes.

EPA to Award $9M from their STAR Program to 7 Universities

laboratory-563423_1920

The EPA will award $1.26 million in funding to Natalia Soares Quinete – an assistant professor in chemistry at FIU – from their $9 million STAR Program. This program aims to support innovation and scientific research focused on advancing the EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment. $9 million will be awarded across seven universities to research exposure to toxic chemicals via soil and dust ingestion.

Six universities will collaborate with FIU to work on this project, including Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., New York University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, University of California Davis, and University of Nevada-Reno.

This collaboration will use this grant to identify specific tracers of dust and soil exposure combined with the relevant environmental information in an effort to estimate soil and dust ingestion rates in children. It may be surprising to learn how toxic these ingestion rates may really be. Young children are especially vulnerable to this exposure method as they often play on the ground and put their hands in their mouths after touching random objects or dirt.

Toxic chemicals are deposited in soil and dust as they are carried through by water and left behind. At present, there is no way to accurately estimate chemical exposure by soil and dust ingestion. Identifying chemical tracers through analytical methodologies will help develop this method. This can then help understand the impacts on underrepresented groups of children.

Alliance Forge Accepted into RNOX Accelerator Spring Cohort

workplace accidents builder-2739175_1920

Alliance Forge is one of 3 companies selected for the spring cohort of RNOX, the Reno tech accelerator. RNOX hosts a Rapid Entrepreneurial Accelerated Launch (R.E.A.L.) program annually. The program provides day-to-day mentorship over the course of 16 weeks.

Alliance Forge was started up by David Espinosa, who was running as a Republican candidate for District 31 in the Nevada State Assembly. The COVID-19 pandemic showed a true limitation with reaching out to campaign when face-to-face is no longer an option. He was inspired to design a cost-effective text messaging platform which would suit the needs of all those running a voter campaign. The beta version offered voter message personalization, custom responses, and a comprehensive reporting suite.

Alliance Forge is now working to commercialize the software. As of November, it was in use by 40 different campaigns across 16 different States. Alliance Forge is hoping the accelerator will help guide them to success in their development and commercialization processes.

Loon’s Balloon: Sky High Internet Source

puerto rico internet

Internet: it’s something most of us use everyday. And when there are outages we feel lost because we rely on it for almost everything. Even though the World Wide Web was only invented in the 1990s, it’s become so entrenched in our day-to-day lives. But there are still some rural areas that don’t have any access for various reasons, one being it’s too expensive. The internet can be sourced from different places, including radio towers, cell providers, satellites, and modems, which are all very expensive equipment and services. But there are companies working to provide innovative ways to reduce these costs, to ensure even remote and isolated areas can access this valuable resource.

Loon is one such company, who has developed a novel approach to solving this problem.. Their method: a high altitude balloon about 11 to 16 miles high to quite literally create a floating internet tower. The balloons are made of lightweight polythene and are filled with helium. Radio hot-spots and LTE networking equipment powered by solar panels are attached to each balloon which will float in the stratosphere for around six months before landing and being collected by Loon. The balloons are also capable of navigating the sky through instruction and by analyzing data collected about air currents and altitude to either maintain or change its current location. The balloons have now flown nearly 24 million miles, with one balloon providing internet to 35,000 people over 31,000 square miles.

Futuristic smart homes are no longer a future dream.

open lab shop local

Sustainable, 3D printed smart homes seem like something out of a ‘Back to the Future’ film, but they’re very much a reality. Nevada-based company haus.me is creating just that, even marketing their homes as ‘zombie-proof’. Although the zombie-proofing is yet to be tested, haus.me’s homes are ready to be shipped, even internationally, complete with all the bells and whistles of smart home technology.

Smart houses are a growing trend in the US, with their market value reaching US$ 51.9 Billion in 2018. There’s a lot of perks to living in a house with mobile monitoring of all systems. Smart homes give people the ability to regulate various functions and appliances, providing ‘greener’ living with the added benefit of cheaper energy bills. They also come with safety benefits in more ways than one: not only can people check which appliances have been left on, but automation systems can also notify people about intruders and other suspicious activity.

There’s also a social movement for tiny homes. They’re a cheaper, mobile alternative to regular houses, with lesser living costs and impacts on the environment. Some love the simplicity of tiny homes, but they’re certainly not for everybody. American homes are, on average, 2,687 square feet. Tiny homes, according to the International Residential Building Code, are almost seven times smaller – a maximum of 400 square feet.

Thankfully, haus.me’s homes currently come in three models, only one of which is considered a ‘tiny home’. The company’s ‘off-the-grid studio’ is 400 square feet and can be manufactured in four to seven weeks. The other two models include a two-bedroom ‘single family house’ and a ‘luxury family house’ that has two floors, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. All three models are nothing short of impressive; the houses are:

  • Mobile, fully autonomous, self-sustaining and efficient on energy. Water tanks, solar battery storage and autonomous sewage all come with the house, so it’s possible to live even in the strangest places. The houses are also equipped with a cloud-based diagnostic system to diagnose maintenance issues in real-time.
  • Complete and ready. They come assembled with electronics, furniture, decor and even wine glasses. There’s also no need for a foundation or any construction.
  • Fully equipped with smart technology. The company doesn’t hold back either, ‘fully equipped’ in this case includes HEPA air quality controls, Sonos speaker systems, Apple TVs, 100 inch projector screens, high-speed internet connections and even a fingerprint door lock. All systems – even security – are remote-controlled from a phone, tablet or other device.
  • Safe. The 3D composite polymer frame is built to last through hurricanes, earthquake, and apparently zombies.

The 3D printing has limitations: there’s a lack of experts and so far only plastics and concrete can be printed. However, material costs, waste and productions time are all reduced. It’s an innovative process that could not exist 20 years ago, and is now revolutionary.

Smart Cities to Become More Connected, Personalized: MIT-startup Soofa creates digital content board, the Soofa Sign

city

What makes a smart city ‘smart’? According to a ResearchGate paper, a smart city is defined as, but not limited to being, “instrumented, interconnected and intelligent.” Based on this definition, Cambridge-based Soofa accomplished just that with its Soofa Sign, which is the first digital bulletin board of the 21st century.

“In any big city, there’s so many things to do. It’s almost an analysis to figure out where to go next, what to do, where are my friends,” Soofa CEO and Co-founder Sandra Richter said. “What this means is, suddenly for the first time, you can share information with your local neighborhood.”

The Soofa Sign is an information sharing platform that has a 42-inch solar powered e-ink display, and members of the community can post announcements via the sign’s content management system (CMS). The Soofa Sign can also display local transit times, PSAs, work of art, and social media feeds. “Soofa makes cities a lot more fun and a lot more connected so that we come back to a bit of a true neighborhood feel,” Richter said. The sign is like a giant Kindle, except it uses less power, runs on renewable energy, and has similarities to a Facebook wall or Twitter timeline. Content contributions, including those previously mentioned, can range from job postings to advertising a business. To do so, one simply goes to talk.soofa.co and registers for the service—convenient and quick when compared to traditional methods. To visually grasp these concepts, check out the video below.

Not only can the signs display curated community content, but they will also collect data, which is meant to assist urban planners and community developers with future building projects. The data collected is not personally identifiable, and Richter commented that Soofa is “trying to get more quantitative data from the health of your public space in a non-invasive way.”

Soofa Signs can currently be found in three American cities: Boston, Las Vegas and Atlanta. For more information on Soofa and the Soofa Sign, please click here.

Are you  also developing new and innovative projects like Soofa? Did you know that you can receive up to 14% back on your research expenses with the R&D Tax Credit? To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
