An Unmanned Future: Austin-based SparkCognition creates UTM solutions

If you have ever wondered about (or even feared) how unmanned airplanes, air taxis and drones will not crash into each other when on a flight path, wonder no more. Boeing Co., the aerospace manufacturing giant, will partner with Austin-based SparkCognition Inc. to create unmanned traffic management (UTM) solutions. To achieve this, Boeing will use SparkCognition’s AI and blockchain technologies to track and create unmanned traffic routes to ensure safe travel conditions for unmanned air transportation.

“We partner with the world’s largest organizations that power, finance, and defend our society to uncover their highest potential through the application of AI technologies,” mentioned a blurb on the SparkCognition website. Solutions developed by the company are “agile” and can “streamline operations of any size, making it easier to accomplish goals and meet objectives in an expedited manner. These solutions can be seamlessly delivered via the cloud or on devices, and can also run on top of a client’s interface of choice.” It’s also worth mentioning that SparkCognition’s AI solutions lowered the cost of maitenance and improved available for a major aviation operator by 35%.

The company’s AI solutions can also warn of aircraft and asset failures before they occur, thus maximising fleet availability, minimizing unscheduled maitenance, and extending asset life. The company also provides simulated environments in which a user can train and control algorithms and evolve swarm tactics using reinforcement learning.

This promising partnership will also bring about a standardized programming interface to support package delivery, industrial inspection and other commercial applications. SparkCognition has its focus on a number of industries, such as cyber security, manufacturing, financial services, maritime, oil & gas, utilities, defence, and of course, aviation. “The world’s number one aviation leader partnering with the world’s most innovative industrial AI company means that unparalleled experience in safety, innovation, scale, and reliability will be brought to bear to address this monumental opportunity,” Husain said.

ScaleFactor: the Antidote to Mid-Month Accounting Blues

A former employee of a Big Four accounting firm was frustrated with the lack of innovation in the accounting and financial sectors.  His solution? Quit his job and start something new.

In 2014, Kurt Rathmann began ScaleFactor from his living room table in Austin with the vision of making traditional back office functions more efficient, especially in accounting and payroll. Rathmann carried out field research, essentially going door-to-door to investigate the needs of small businesses and incorporated his findings to develop a state of the art accounting software solution.

From bookkeeping, invoicing, to tax filings, ScaleFactor automates these time-consuming tasks to make them more efficient and to offer small business owners greater insight into the health of their business.

One of the startup’s key features is real time reporting. Most accounting firms release financial statements at the end of the month, making the first 10 to 15 days of the month “crazy busy,” explained Rathmann. “That forces the accountant to get into a phase of just trying to get it done. There are long hours, they’re not making it home for dinner, they’re just trying to complete the work.” On top of that, the data is about 30 days old and may not be as relevant. Instead, by using real time data analytics, a company can get advanced insight into its business. Rathmann said, “The data cycle gets cut from 30 days to just one or two days, and the business owner can really dictate some future actions they’ll make, and tactically navigate the business, rather than just react to it.”

Rathmann identified other bottlenecks in traditional accounting. “A lot of people dread interacting with their accountant, for whatever reason,” he said. “We’re really trying to change that.” When an owner has a pressing question, they don’t want to wait for their accountant to respond in one or two days – they expect immediate answers. Using machine learning, ScaleFactor determines how to send real-time notifications to facilitate better communication between the small business owner and the accountant.  Important messages will be sent via text message while less urgent correspondence would be sent by email.

“It’s a response to a younger generation and less personal relationships that are part of a millennial-type generation,” Rathmann said. “It’s also that people are less patient for access to data and to information that is theirs. If there is something financial-related to their business, it’s very personal to entrepreneurs and small businesses. It’s more of, ‘I want it now,’ and, ‘Why can’t I have it now? I’m supposed to have it now.’ That’s a lot of the reactions we get in the connected world we live in. People expect faster.”

No Rabbits Here: Austin-based HOPZERO battles cybercrime with hops

Cyber-security is one of the most pressing challenges companies around the world will have to address in the coming years. Here are some recent statistics on cybercrime from thebestvpn.com:

– In 2016, the U.S government spent $28 billion on cyber-security, compared to $7.5 billion in 2007.

With disturbing statistics like these, what can be done? An Austin-based company is developing a promising solution.

HOPZERO provides cyber-security by monitoring hops through its cloud-based service, Hop Sphere Radius Security. “For the last two years, I’ve been developing this technology to limit how far data can travel, and we do that by hop count,” Bill Alderson founder and CEO of HOPZERO said. For context, hops are one portion of the path between a source and a destination. By way of the internet, a data packet passes through bridges, routers and gateways that connects network devices, and thus the passing of a data packet is called a hop.

HOPZERO controls the number of hops a packet of data can make before it expires in a network—this means data is directed to destroy itself before it is used for pernicious or malicious purposes. “Every packet has a toll value in it, and we limit that toll value based upon our analysis that looks at every device it’s going to, and we record the hop count to and from all their peers,” Alderson continued. If a data packet is moving more hops than the set amount, HOPZERO will cease any further data movements. The hops technology controls distance, while firewalls control access, and when together, they make for an innovative defense system.

It is worth mentioning that a web server can be restricted to a local area, all the way up to another country. This is called a device hop radius. Any network device can be restricted to a set safe zone, even if a firewall is not present.

HOPZERO also wants to develop protections for various devices, including the copious amount of existent IoT devices out there. “We are automating to bring it to thousands of systems. We believe we have found the solution that everyone has been looking for that will significantly protect our government, businesses, homes and personal devices from hackers and malicious malware,” Alderson said.

Access Beyoncé in the Blink of an Eye: Austin-based Blink Identity materializes biometric admissions technology

Waiting in massive lineups to access venues may be a thing of the past. Austin-based startup Blink Identity has the solution we’ve all been waiting for: biometric access to a concert that is quick and seamless. “Blink Identity has created a fast, accurate and user-friendly identity service for live entertainment venues, solving the bottleneck problem and creating a preferential experience for consumers and venue owners alike,” said Jordan Fudge of Sinai Ventures, a lead investor of Blink Identity.

The company was conceived in January 2018 by Mary Haskett and Dr. Alex Kilpatrick; both of which have impressive qualifications. The duo has over a decade of experience designing, developing and deploying large scale biometric identification systems internationally for the Department of Defense, according to the company website.

Blink Identity technology works by identifying people at a normal walking pace–a revolution in itself. The system can verify the identity of 60 people per minute via a sensor and can do so in any lighting conditions, according to reports. Not having to stop and verify multiple identities allows the technology to be applied to events where tens of thousands of people gather—perfect for an entertainment company like Live Nation. “It is very notable that today we announce our partnership with, and investment in, Blink Identity, which has cutting-edge facial recognition technology, enabling you to associate your digital ticket with your image, then just walk into the show,” a Live Nation press release stated.

“Blink is revolutionary. Currently, commercial biometrics are almost nonexistent—primarily because other systems are high friction, difficult to use, inaccurate and vague about privacy/data protections. Our unique experience at large-scale/in-motion identity, combined with our focus on usability and privacy, will allow us to lead adoption in the commercial sector as well as open up new markets,” Haskett said in a statement.

Slurpee Inspires Improvements to Surgical Device: Engineering students at UT Austin develop ClearCam, solution for laparoscope obstruction

Inspiration for an invention can be found anywhere, and students at the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin are proof of such statement. The keen graduate students noticed that a Slurpee straw, with it’s shovel-like end, is the perfect size and shape to act as a squeegee for a laparoscope. For the sake of context, a laparoscope is a fiberoptic camera tool used during minimally invasive surgery procedures so surgeons can see the interior of a body. During a procedure, the laparoscope can become foggy and covered with bodily fluids and solids—not exactly ideal when conducting a surgery from the outside.

Under the guidance of associate professor of mechanical engineering Chris Rylander, the students designed a scoop-like shaped device that keeps the view of the internal camera clear. “This is a problem faced by surgeons every day,” said Rylander. “When a laparoscope gets dirty in the body—due to condensation or contact with blood or fatty tissue, visibility is diminished. Surgeons must stop the procedure, pull the laparoscope out of the body, wipe it off and return to the task at hand, extending the time to complete the procedure and simultaneously generating potential safety concerns.” With the increase of antibiotic resistance and MRSA, less time out of the body reduces the risk of short and long-term complications.

Rylander was approached by Dr. John Uecker of UT’s Dell Medical School who was looking for a solution to the obstructed laparoscope problem. The invention is appropriately named the ClearCam. It works by using a geometrically altered polymer that can be controlled externally to remove obstructions from the laparoscope lens without scratching it. The design of the ClearCam is based off previous prototypes that were improved to meet the needs of surgeons across the U.S.

“Alexa, schedule a video call with Dr. Smith”: Austin-based startup Medici advances telehealth

Doctor visits are a pain, and not because of that irritating chest infection or scorching fever. Wait times in the U.S. have increased 30 percent over the past four years, and that percentage is likely to rise over time, according to an article by Medscape. There is good news, though. Medici, a telehealth startup based in Austin, Texas, wants to make your doctor visits more efficient and less stressful by way of your mobile device.

Apart from doctors being overloaded, “they are buried with regulatory requirements, administrative hurdles and downward pressure on their own costs to run their practices. This burden is increasingly taking time away from doctors’ ability to focus on what really matters: providing great care for patients,” a statement from the Medici website said. “We are driven by a singular purpose. To change the doctor-patient relationship. The world is changing and healthcare must come along, too.”

The Medici application, referred to as the “WhatsApp of healthcare”, combines five principles: speed, harmony, ambition, resourcefulness and excellence. The app allows patients to contact doctors, be it physicians, dentists, therapists, even veterinarians, via text message or video call; all from a single platform. A diagnosis can be made over the app, which in return can reduce the number of patients in the waiting room. “Diamonds are Forever” – Eterneva turns loss into jewels to celebrate loved ones

Saying goodbye to loved ones is never easy. Loss is as intimate as the relationship we had with the person we lost. We each cope with it differently. Some cherish invaluable memories. Others seek tangible means to commemorate their loved ones. Many want to keep their loved one’s story alive from generation to generation.

When Adelle Archer lost her business mentor Tracey Kaufman to cancer in 2015, Archer hoped to honor Kaufman’s legacy in her own way. Archer was working for a diamond growing lab at the time. During a conversation with a technician at the lab, she conceived the idea of transforming some of her mentor’s cremated remains into a yellow diamond to give to Kaufman’s family. The idea then spawned Eterneva, a startup that takes ashes and turns them into unique diamonds and jewels.

Human remains contain carbon, a key component for diamond processing. Based in Austin, Eterneva uses a cup of ashes, approximately an eighth of the average amount produced from cremation, to create a diamond.  These diamonds are customizable by weight, color and cut, allowing customers to personalize diamonds unique to their loved one. Archer made a yellow diamond in honor of Kaufman since yellow was her mentor’s favorite color.

Eterneva’s approach is taking a different spin on loss and death. As Archer said, “A diamond lasts more than a single generation, the way an urn of ashes won’t. Nobody wants to inherit that, but they of course want to inherit their great-grandfather’s diamond.” One of Eterneva’s customers was a mother whose 19-year-old daughter died in a car accident. She chose to have her daughter’s ashes turned into a blue diamond ring. Archer explained, “She told me that she wants people to comment on it. It gives her an opportunity to talk about her daughter. People don’t want their loved one to be forgotten–they want to talk about them. They want them to be remembered and celebrated.”

ICON’s Vulcan 3-D printer packs a punch against homelessness

With 1.2 billion people worldwide without access to adequate shelter, one Texas start-up hopes to change that. On Monday, March 12, Austin-based ICON unveiled the world’s first permitted 3-D printed home. ICON’s Vulcan 3-D printer built the home in just under 48 hours and for less than $4,000, a fraction of average construction costs.

The 350 sq foot building will serve as ICON’s office, allowing the company to witness firsthand any issues with the home and make necessary modifications before going into full scale production. The home is complete with a living room, bathroom, and office space. Unlike other companies that have built 3-D printed homes that “look like Yoda huts”, ICON was intent on constructing a home that was functional and modern. Jason Ballard, one of ICON’s three founders, asserted, “For this venture to succeed, they have to be the best houses.”

The Vulcan 3-D printer used durable yet cheap materials and produced little waste in the making of the Austin house. According to ICON’s other co-founder Evan Loomis, the concrete mixture used in the Vulcan is three times stronger than traditional concrete. The Vulcan can produce single-story, 600 to 800 sq ft homes in under 24 hours. Andrew Logan at Logan Architecture, the head designer for the project, added that the Vulcan 3-D printer allowed for more creativity compared to conventional construction. “When you’re talking about standard methods of construction, the guys in the field have a really hard time building that [unique] geometry,” Logan explained. “It’s difficult getting it all lined up properly. But if you have a machine doing it, it’s going straight from the computer to the field. You have infinite design ability to get crazy with your angles and curves and forms.”

Because the Vulcan 3-D printer can build homes faster, more affordably, and sustainably, ICON has high hopes for the tool to be used in humanitarian applications, especially in the developing world. The company is teaming up with the non-profit New Story to address homelessness and global housing shortages. Together, they will construct a community of 100 houses in El Salvador next year using the Vulcan 3-D printer technology.

Loomis said, “We just think homes are not obtainable and affordable and they certainly aren’t sustainable. So we thought that the convergence of robotics, material science, and software would have a novel way for people to afford a basic human need: shelter.”

Briggo’s Robotic Barista: the coffee vending machine that’s actually not that bad

A barista that consistently makes your favorite coffee perfectly and never spells your name wrong? That’s what Briggo Coffee Haus promises with its affectionately-dubbed “robotic barista”. The Austin-based company developed its automated coffee dispenser to take the craft of coffee and mechanize the experience without sacrificing standards of perfection, personalization, and efficiency.

In a technologically-driven world where customization and convenience go hand-in-hand, the robotic barista seems like a match made in heaven. Coffee drinkers can choose from 13 options and adjust the order to suit their preferences, such as adding vanilla syrup, two shots of espresso, and skim milk. Wait a minute or two, and the perfect cup of coffee will appear. Customers’ orders are saved in the company’s cloud system so they can re-order their favorite recipe at a later time. There’s also a Briggo app that allows coffee drinkers to pre-order as they’re on their way to the Coffee Haus. According to Vending Times’ Paul Schlossberg, the whole process was intuitive, quick, and easy. He added, “Here is a vending machine for the 21st century.”

Briggo’s machine offers a precision that human baristas don’t have. While humans may measure based on dashes and splashes, moments and seconds, the robotic barista has its measurements down to the milligram and millisecond. Briggo CEO Kevin Nater explained, “Based on a customer’s selection, we precisely calculate to the gram the ingredients, as well as the precise frothing parameters needed based on those ingredients.” The Briggo machine can also make 100 cups an hour. It’s fast, convenient, and reliable.

Briggo recently introduced its robotic barista at the University of Texas’ renowned ice cream shop Moojo in Austin. Briggo asserts it doesn’t plan on replacing baristas. Rather, it seeks to bring its robotic barista to locations where good quality coffee is hard to find, such as corporate campuses, hospitals, and airports.

WayBlazer Makes Travel Planning “Smarter” with Artificial Intelligence

Planning a romantic trip for your partner this upcoming holiday? Maybe a family vacation to a kid-friendly resort? Or perhaps you want to take a solo trip for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure? Whatever your desired destination, we all know travel planning can be a headache. Looking online for the best deals isn’t a walk in the park either. “The average traveler searches over 30 sites before booking,” Terry Jones told Digital Journal. Founder of Travelocity.com and Kayak.com, Jones is keenly aware of the difficulties behind travel planning logistics. To improve the long-winded process, Jones together with Manoj Saxena, former General Manager of IBM Watson Solutions, merged travel planning with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and started WayBlazer.

Founded in 2014, the Austin-based software startup developed an interactive platform for travel companies to help travelers plan their next trip, whether it’s booking the flight, accommodation, tours, and so forth. However, more than just a way to find the cheapest plane tickets or hotel rooms, the AI-driven tool provides contextually relevant recommendations for the user. Unlike traditional computing, AI is able to recognize and communicate in natural languages and can therefore vet out irrelevant keywords to better grasp the kind of experience a traveler is looking for. It can sift through travel reviews, location descriptions, and blogs. Better yet, AI can also comprehend images and videos to gather even more information about a desired location.  Jones explained, “By communicating in natural language, suppliers can derive the consumer’s actual intent in trip planning (i.e. ‘I want to vacation on an island in January for my anniversary’).” WayBlazer’s technology also gets smarter with every use because of AI’s capacity to learn and acquire new knowledge.

The company offers its AI platform to existing travel companies. Most recently, Fareportal, the company behind CheapOair and OneTravel, partnered with WayBlazer and after a trial, the company was pleased with the AI technology. Fareportal founder and CEO Sam S. Jain said, “Using their artificial intelligence product to optimize our hotel offerings, we’ve seen significant improvements in engagement on our website and an average conversion lift of 10% for hotel bookings.” Notably, WayBlazer isn’t out to replace human travel agents just yet. Jones asserted that it can be used by humans. For one, the AI can help human travel agents better answer their clients’ requests, especially the more difficult ones.

Because of its ingenuity, WayBlazer received the “Top Innovator” and “People’s Choice” Awards at the Lion’s Den’s “Digital Meets Travel” competition in 2017.
