Waiting in massive lineups to access venues may be a thing of the past. Austin-based startup Blink Identity has the solution we’ve all been waiting for: biometric access to a concert that is quick and seamless. “Blink Identity has created a fast, accurate and user-friendly identity service for live entertainment venues, solving the bottleneck problem and creating a preferential experience for consumers and venue owners alike,” said Jordan Fudge of Sinai Ventures, a lead investor of Blink Identity.

The company was conceived in January 2018 by Mary Haskett and Dr. Alex Kilpatrick; both of which have impressive qualifications. The duo has over a decade of experience designing, developing and deploying large scale biometric identification systems internationally for the Department of Defense, according to the company website.

Blink Identity technology works by identifying people at a normal walking pace–a revolution in itself. The system can verify the identity of 60 people per minute via a sensor and can do so in any lighting conditions, according to reports. Not having to stop and verify multiple identities allows the technology to be applied to events where tens of thousands of people gather—perfect for an entertainment company like Live Nation. “It is very notable that today we announce our partnership with, and investment in, Blink Identity, which has cutting-edge facial recognition technology, enabling you to associate your digital ticket with your image, then just walk into the show,” a Live Nation press release stated.

“Blink is revolutionary. Currently, commercial biometrics are almost nonexistent—primarily because other systems are high friction, difficult to use, inaccurate and vague about privacy/data protections. Our unique experience at large-scale/in-motion identity, combined with our focus on usability and privacy, will allow us to lead adoption in the commercial sector as well as open up new markets,” Haskett said in a statement.

Reducing Agriculture Footprints in Dallas: Eden Green Technology develops Crisply, an optimal plant growth process

A Dallas-based vertical farming company is revolutionizing how food is produced. Eden Green Technology’s Crisply is flaunting its lush, emerald green produce as a cleaner and safer alternative to traditional agriculture methods.

Soil, which can contain E. coli and Listeria, both of which have had their shining moments in American headlines as of late, poses more risks and has less of a yield when producing greens. In comparison, Eden Green’s vertical farming techniques require less water and land than traditional soil methods. The company has reportedly also reduced its cooling costs by one-eighth when compared to other greenhouse methods.

Free of pesticides, herbicides and chemicals, Eden Green uses a vine system where each plant is enclosed in a microclimate bubble. “We perfected this transformative vertical closed-loop solution to flow water, nutrients, oxygen and sunlight into the plants’ microclimate at the perfect ratio, in order to optimize the natural powers of photosynthesis to maximize output for people who need it most,” the company website boasts.

The seeds used are organic and non-GMO. All plants are grown under natural light and grow year-round. Eden Green expects to grow 10 to 15 harvests a year with a crop loss of 1%. This is a massive improvement when compared to traditional soil-growing, which yields two harvests with a crop loss of 30%. With these facts and figures, Eden Green is believed to be the first vertical farm with the scalability to meet the produce needs of regional food distribution systems.

“We pick our produce, package the same-day, and stamp the date when they are harvested on the package, so consumers know exactly how fresh their salads are. We also make it possible for our retail partners to put our produce on their shelves immediately after they’ve been harvested, in some cases that same day. No other company does that,” said Jaco Booyens, Eden Green’s co-chair.

Alternative Fertility Monitoring in 2018: San Francisco-based Modern Fertility develops economical at-home hormone test

Women are putting off having children to build up a career and economic status. Those in their 30s are having more children than women in their 20s. However, as women age, hormonal changes follow thus affecting the chances of conceiving.

Modern Fertility, a San Francisco-based startup, wants to help women ignite important fertility conversations with their doctors. To do so, Modern Fertility created an at-home hormone test. The test can be ordered online where a doctor will review the order and customize it based on the type of birth control a client is on. Once it arrives, one can choose to be tested at home or at a local Quest Diagnostics lab. The at-home test simply requires the client to prick her finger and collect a blood sample–the accumulated blood should then be placed onto the provided test strip. The strip is then sent to a CLIA Certified lab where it is tested for nine hormones. Once reviewed by a physician, a private profile is sent back that explains how hormone levels may affect the number of eggs a woman has left, if her process of ovulation is normal, and other red flags that could affect a fertility window. Other trackable signals include if the onset of menopause could happen at an earlier age, and if egg freezing or IVF is the right way to go.

Carley Leahy and Afton Vechery co-founded Modern Fertility. “We’re really speaking to women much earlier in life who know that a career may be important and they may want to have children down the road, but want to be able to check in proactively,” Leahy said. “Modern Fertility is the first step for women. We’re really working with women before they get to a doctor’s office and giving them this information so that they can have a more informed conversation with their doctor,” Vechery said. “We found that you can go to a fertility clinic and take simple blood tests to check in on where you stand. But no everyone can afford them and the results can be tricky to decipher. We use information to get smart about everything in our lives—relationships, money, school. Why is something as formative as fertility still a black box?,” a statement from Leahy and Vechery said.

The Modern Fertility hormone test costs $199 compared to a $600 clinical doctor consultation. The company still recommends consulting with your doctor about any test results. More information about Modern Fertility can be found by clicking here.

Disease to Ease: Allen Institute develops 3D cell model to aid disease research

A Seattle-based research organization, the Allen Institute for Cell Science, has developed an Integrated Cell program that shows the various organelles within cells, specifically stem cells—even if they haven’t been mapped yet.

In a summary from the institutes’ Integrated Cell website, “the Allen Integrated Cell unites two technologies to improve our understanding of how human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) vary in both shape and organization. One is a deterministic model, which shows the organization of organelles in particular individual cells, and the other model is probabilistic – showing likely shapes and locations for organelles in any cell – even for cells we have not studied.” To put the probabilistic model into visual perspective, here’s a diagram that outlines the variation model:

”This is a new way to see inside living human cells. It’s like seeing the whole cell for the first time. In the future, this will impact drug discovery, disease research and how we frame basic studies involving human cells,” said Rick Horwitz, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Allen Institute.

The new modelling method will also help to reduce fluorescence toxicity in cells when they are being studied. “Fluorescence microscopy is expensive and toxic to cells; increasingly so when you tag multiple structures,” said Molly Maleckar, Ph.D., Director of Modeling. “Our approach allows scientists to view cells and conduct experiments at the reduced cost of brightfield microscopy, with the structure-identifying power of fluorescence microscopy – and without its toxic effects. It’s really the best of both worlds.”

AI ‘Fortune-telling’: Texas-based firm creates AI algorithm to prevent costly machine downtimes

Veros Systems, a Texas-based AI tech firm, helps machinery owners to “gain actionable insights on rotating equipment reliability, performance and process abnormalities using only electrical signal analytics.” In essence, Veros has created a technology that can predict system failures using electrical waveform analysis. What does that mean, exactly?

According to the Veros website, their technologies use “edge measurements and processing,” which combines “rich electrical waveform data with machine learning and AI-based algorithms – leveraging over a decade of historical and event data – to provide predictive insights into machine operation and health, making the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) a reality.” To put it simply, Veros has created a technology that predicts mechanical failures; before they happen.  

Knowing when a machine will break down can help companies to decrease downtimes, improve efficiency and optimize maintenance, thus helping to cut costs and boost profits. In a recent statement, Harry Brekelmans, Projects and Technology Director at Shell Global, said, “We estimate that Veros could deliver an additional $300 million a year of production that would otherwise have been lost by unplanned shutdowns.” Impressive, to say the least!

Surviving Hurricanes and Hopelessness: App to ‘rescue’ those in need, post-natural disaster

The frequency of natural disasters is on the rise in the United States. From Hurricane Katrina, to the more recent Hurricane Irma, the need for efficient, temporary resettlement for displaced persons will, arguably, also rise. The good news? There may be an app for that!

Adam Huminsky and Brian Hilinski, founders of the Charlotte-based startup, Harmany, were tired of watching evacuees struggle to find places for temporary shelter in the wake of catastrophic events, such as hurricanes. Huminsky said, “People have grown tired of watching disasters unfold, with no way to help until much later […] Harmany was created to give everyone the ability to make a difference in the moment.” The application connects the profile of an evacuee (person with needs) with a host (person with offerings). In an article featured on techstartups.com, “After completing a series of security measures, profiles are visible on an interactive map. Harmany believes secure matches can be made in as little as two hours.

The app will offer other benefits, such as less crowding on roads, specifically evacuation routes, which translates to safer highway conditions. There is hope that the application will also reduce surge pricing for essential needs, such as hotel rooms.

Heinz is bringing Mayochup to America, but who really invented the mayonnaise-ketchup matrimony?

Famous for ketchup and baked beans, the Heinz Company is now dead-set on introducing to American audiences what it claims is a novel concoction: Mayochup. Think of it as a union between ketchup and mayonnaise.

“Want #mayochup in stores? 500,000 votes for ‘yes’ and we’ll release it to you saucy Americans,” Heinz tweeted. Of the 930,000 votes on the Twitter poll, 55 percent gave their approval. That means the company will soon bring the bottled Mayochup onto American shelves.

Heinz’s rendition of Mayochup is already sold overseas, particularly in the Middle East. However, for many, Mayochup isn’t anything new and stories have peppered across the Internet on how the combination first came into existence.

Legend has it that in 1925, a young man was eating prawns with friends at a golf club in Mar del Plata, Argentina. As a joke, the young man requested different condiments from the kitchen to mix with the traditional aderezo of mayonnaise. The spontaneous experimentation resulted in a union between mayonnaise and ketchup, plus a dash of cognac and Tabasco. The friends called it “salsa golf” and found it was delicious with the prawns. “It was just a bunch of bored kids doing what bored kids do,” said Victor Ego Ducrot, author of The Flavors of the Homeland. Forty years later, salsa golf exploded in popularity with big brands, from Fanacoa to Hellman’s, producing the mix commercially. The young man who originally invented salsa golf was Luis Federico Leloir, the 1970 Nobel Prize in chemistry winner for his discovery of sugar nucleotides and their role in the biosynthesis of carbohydrates. Leloir reportedly said, “If I had patented the sauce, I would have earned much more money than as a scientist.”

The mayonnaise-ketchup creation is popular across Latin America. Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela and others call it “salsa rosada.” Puerto Ricans call it “mayoketchup”. Variations also exist across other parts of the globe, from Eastern Europe to the Middle East. Even the Brits have their own version, known as “Marie Rose sauce”.

In fact, America already has a home-grown mayo-ketchup origin story. Utah’s Don Carlos Edwards allegedly began serving mayonnaise-ketchup concoctions to his customers back in the 1940s, calling it “Fry Sauce”. It is now a staple in Utahan society.

So while Mayochup isn’t necessarily re-inventing the wheel, it does bring a new twist to the condiment by putting it in a bottle. Admittedly, this has raised scepticism among critics. Samantha Schmidt asserted in The Washington Post, “But whatever it’s called, wherever it’s consumed, many lifelong lovers of the sauce agree on one thing: it’s disgraceful to squeeze the stuff out of a bottle.” NPR station reporter Nadege C Green raised doubts about the ability of Heinz to produce a tasty concoction: “Yeah, you have to custom mix it. Gotta have the right mayo to ketchup ratio. I don’t trust this at all.”

We can’t know for sure until Mayochup hits the supermarkets. But one thing’s certain: Heinz knows how to put the “sauciest” in its sauces.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. “Diamonds are Forever” – Eterneva turns loss into jewels to celebrate loved ones

Saying goodbye to loved ones is never easy. Loss is as intimate as the relationship we had with the person we lost. We each cope with it differently. Some cherish invaluable memories. Others seek tangible means to commemorate their loved ones. Many want to keep their loved one’s story alive from generation to generation.

When Adelle Archer lost her business mentor Tracey Kaufman to cancer in 2015, Archer hoped to honor Kaufman’s legacy in her own way. Archer was working for a diamond growing lab at the time. During a conversation with a technician at the lab, she conceived the idea of transforming some of her mentor’s cremated remains into a yellow diamond to give to Kaufman’s family. The idea then spawned Eterneva, a startup that takes ashes and turns them into unique diamonds and jewels.

Human remains contain carbon, a key component for diamond processing. Based in Austin, Eterneva uses a cup of ashes, approximately an eighth of the average amount produced from cremation, to create a diamond.  These diamonds are customizable by weight, color and cut, allowing customers to personalize diamonds unique to their loved one. Archer made a yellow diamond in honor of Kaufman since yellow was her mentor’s favorite color.

Eterneva’s approach is taking a different spin on loss and death. As Archer said, “A diamond lasts more than a single generation, the way an urn of ashes won’t. Nobody wants to inherit that, but they of course want to inherit their great-grandfather’s diamond.” One of Eterneva’s customers was a mother whose 19-year-old daughter died in a car accident. She chose to have her daughter’s ashes turned into a blue diamond ring. Archer explained, “She told me that she wants people to comment on it. It gives her an opportunity to talk about her daughter. People don’t want their loved one to be forgotten–they want to talk about them. They want them to be remembered and celebrated.”

R&D applications open for advancing cyber-resilient energy systems

$25 million of research has been funded by The Energy Department (DOE) into investigating innovative approaches to strengthen and secure the nation’s critical energy infrastructure. As energy cyber-security is a national priority, the Energy Delivery Systems (CEDS) program is now seeking R&D applications.

The Energy Secretary strongly believes that Energy cyber-security demands an increase in advancement technologies in order to facilitate more secure and resilient systems for America’s future prosperity, vitality and energy independence. It is believed that programs such as CEDS have the best chance to pursue innovative cyber-security solutions to cyber threats facing the nation.

The Funding Opportunity Announcement builds on DOE’s efforts with the private sector towards improving the security of the nation’s critical energy infrastructure and reducing the risk of a cyber incidents that could disrupt energy delivery.

The five important areas that the selected programs will promote industry advancement in are:

  • Redesign for cyber-resilient architecture – electric and oil and natural gas (ONG) subsectors
  • Cyber-security for the ONG environment
  • Cyber secure communications
  • Cyber secure cloud-based technologies in the operation technology (OT) environment
  • Innovative technologies that enhance cyber-security in the energy sector

Texan Grocery King H-E-B launches Self-Checkout Mobile App

Waiting in those long lines and fighting for the best deals can make grocery shopping a real hassle. While self-serve checkout counters have sped up the process, they have inadvertently encouraged theft and thievery. Amazon’s new Seattle warehouse may have overcome those issues with its Amazon Go grocery store but Texas-based H-E-B’s new self-checkout mobile app could give the retail giant a run for its money.

The app allows customers to freely peruse the shelves and scan items they want to purchase. When they’re ready to checkout, users can pay via the mobile app and just need to show the digital receipt to an H-E-B employee before existing. More than just a self-checkout mobile app, H-E-B Go also tells customers the aisles where they can find certain items, a handy feature especially if you’ve ever been inside one of H-E-B’s massive grocery stores. The mobile app keeps track of users’ shopping lists to provide recommendations and reminders on future shopping trips. It offers coupons too, helping users save even more on their shopping trips.

Currently, H-E-B’s self-checkout mobile app is in use at two locations: the South Flores location in San Antonio and the De Zavala Road location near Shavano Park. The app is still in its pilot stage and not yet ready to roll out to other stores, but it’s already a hit among users.
